History

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra began broadcasts at 2.30pm on 2 February 2002. Juliette Ferrington introduced the first programme – commentary of Manchester United against Sunderland. The station was brought into existence to provide additional radio sports coverage that could not be accommodated on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 4 Longwave, or sports that would be inappropriate if broadcast on BBC Local Radio. Despite many television rights to sporting events being heavily fought over by commercial companies, such as Sky Sports and ITV Sport, radio sports coverage for many events are still held by the BBC: the main competetor being the commercial station talkSPORT.

The commentaries provided on 5 Live Sports Extra are different from other stations, as the commentaries are broadcast without breaks for news, as occurs on 5 Live, or the shipping forecast as on Radio 4 Longwave. The station is also unique in that if formally goes off air when not needed or when no sporting events are broadcast; this is unusual as there has been a move in recent times to simulcast other stations: BBC Local Radio stations transmit 5 Live when off air and Radio 4 broadcasts the BBC World Service. This causes issues for those attempting to locate the signal on DAB Digital Radio, as the signal can only be found when the station is actually broadcasting, as it is not preset at other times.
